The Furnace in Your Colorado Springs Home: Basic Parts

The basic function of your furnace is to heat up air and move it into your home. Here are some of the basic parts that it uses to do that.

  • Blower – The fan, also called the “blower”, is responsible for pulling in new air from outside and for moving the heated air through your home.
  • Burner – The burner plate is where the actual heat for your furnace is generated. The burner pulls in fuel, burns it and creates heat.
  • Heat exchanger – When the burner is operating, it heats up the heat exchanger.
  • Ducts – The ducts in your home are like the veins of your furnace. Heated air is pushed through them to each of your rooms.

How the Parts Work Together

When you turn on your furnace, the burner activates and starts burning fuel. The flames heat up the heat exchanger. The blower pulls in fresh air from outside and blows it across the heat exchanger. The newly heated air then continues through the ducts into your home. The heat exchanger also has another job: to exhaust the toxic combustion gasses out of your home.

How an Electric Furnace Works

An electric furnace works in much the same way as their gas-fired counterparts. Instead of burning fuel on a burner, they heat up a series of coils that act as the heat exchanger. The blower pushes air across them to heat it up.
